German Village

German Village
German Village, a neighborhood just south of downtown, does not take inspiration from or try to replicate a Bavarian village. Rather, its homes and buildings date from the 1840s-1890s, built largely by German immigrants working in nearby breweries and industry, and have been preserved and maintained. German Village’s orange masonry buildings and sidewalks have drawn visitors to the area for decades, welcoming all to stroll amongst the beautiful homes, interesting shops and acclaimed restaurants. Schiller Park serves as a hub for picnics, dog owners, tennis enthusiasts, and lazy days basking in the sun. As a historic district, no structure exceeds three stories, allowing the nearly 200’ spire of St. Mary’s Church to tower above everything around it. Residents live an urban lifestyle – housing is dense, sometimes just inches between structures, and parking is often on the brick paver streets. Nationally recognized for its annual Haus und Garten tour, German Village is a local treasure that never goes out of style.
