Founded in 1801, Powell went through several name changes during its early years, and was even called Middlebury and Hall’s Corners at one point.  It wasn’t until 1857 that the residents settled on naming the town Powell after a successful application for a post office. More than 49% of residents are bachelor’s degree holders, and 33.5% of the population have a graduate degree.

The land that present-day Powell sits on was once populated by a number of Native American tribes such as Miami, Delaware, Ottawa, and Erie. The early 17th century saw French Canadians and Europeans settle in the area and claim ownership of the land. The area became part of Ohio Country by the 18th century, but portions of the land were claimed by several states during the American Revolution. The area was eventually awarded to American Revolutionary War Veteran James Parker as payment for services rendered during the war.

Thomas Hall, one of the first settlers in the area, opened a general store in 1850, at the crossroads of what is known today as Historic Downtown Powell. Hall’s store served as a mail drop-off point where residents could pick up their parcel. As the town’s population grew, the need for a post office soon became apparent, and in 1857, the residents applied for a post office to serve the area. Judge Thomas Watkins Powell of Delaware, Ohio was instrumental in the establishment of the post office in question. To show their appreciation, the residents named the town after him.

In 1947, the settlement in Powell (numbering 400 residents in all) became officially recognized as a municipality. Population stayed more or less the same until the early 1980s when real estate investors began exploring the town’s development potential. Powell became a city in 2000.
